Zume Pizza · Case 04

Zume scaled the unproven part

The fleet grew around a mechanical premise that still did not work reliably in one moving truck.

ZUME PIZZA

TLDR

Zume wanted robots, ovens, and delivery trucks to make pizza arrive perfectly fresh. The essential test—could it cook reliably in a moving vehicle?—was never settled. Its failure mode was scaling an unresolved prototype instead of isolating the hardest technical risk. $445M later proved that scale multiplies a flaw as efficiently as it multiplies a win.
